Veterans' Honor -- Hybrid Tea 1999 (Large-Flowered) Veterans' Honor has very stunning dark red blooms with dark green, semi-glossy foliage and a light raspberry fragrance. The Jackson & Perkins catalog states, "As the fragrant flowers mature, the color is softened by pink overtones that blend beautifully with lilac-hued blooms." The large blooms of 25 to 30 petals can reach 5 to 6 inches in diameter. The buds are high centered. This variety is an upright grower of 4 to 5 feet with a width of 5 feet. Jackson & Perkins Roses developed Veterans' Honor and, in fact, designated it as their "2000 Rose of the Year." Because of its recent introduction, most information procured from rosarians in regard to this rose is anecdotal in nature. Due to the personal recommendation of Dr. Kenneth W. Kizer (the former Veterans Administration's Secretary for Health), Veterans' Honor was developed "to signify the pride and gratitude that we as citizens of this nation have for our veterans." In addition, Dr. Kizer commented, "The freedom that we enjoy around the world would not be possible without the sacrifices and beneficence of these veterans." This rose will always have a special place in my heart and in our rose garden. My family alone has collectively 150 years of military service on behalf of the United States of America. I am honored to have such a magnificent rose which has been dedicated to the men and women who have served courageously in our Armed Forces. Veterans' Honor can be purchased through local and mail order nurseries. Steven K. Boswell |
